iWeb 3.0 Slideshow Control Buttons
Helping a friend move an old site and because the iWPopUpSlideshow.js script is calling a dead url, the nav buttons on the slideshow are broken. I was able to find them and put the set together. If you right-click save as they are correctly labeled for what the script is looking for. In the iWPopUpSlideshow.js file I changed the
var baseURL="http://www.me.com/1/slideshow/"
to
baseURL="../Media/"
and put the images in Media/images (had to add the images directory)

Me With Recovery Bird, The Band
Sometimes when a bird hits a window here, if its neck isn't broken, they can be nursed back to health with just a little warmth from your hands. It's a wondrous little miracle to be a part of. This little fellow has just snapped out of it and is about to take off.
Nathaniel
Nathaniel was a street guy in Venice CA early 2000s or so. He was a sweetheart and we always talked and had a vibe. This from a video I was shooting… Simon and Swinda were getting married and I had a camera. We were walking by. Nathaniel was just there, in a blanket, on the sidewalk. Look at that smile.
Wednesday Afternoon Rabbit Hole
Peter Asher (wish he had his own podcast!) recommends a book Beatles publicist Derek Taylor wrote in this excellent Tetragrammaton (Rick Rubin) episode…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiZ-N7ELWLo
The book, "As Time Goes By" is a fun read. Derek was very close with the Beatles, even being called 'the fifth Beatle' at times. On the last page he sums up what he'd been up to since leaving Apple records and mentions having produced Harry Nilsson's "A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night", which I'd never heard of. It turned out to be cover songs from the American Songbook, classics arranged by Gordon Jenkins.
Nilsson covers a song I love that is not as well known, "This Is All I Ask". The whole album is excellent, and I'll link to it further down, but check out this last verse and wait til he gets to the word 'sing'. Whoa!
The whole album is A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night
I know "This Is All I Ask" through the Nat King Cole version which is spectacular. It's written and arranged by Gordon Jenkins!
I was hoping I'd find a live version. It's not in this set but, check it out! A 1963 BBC Nat King Cole special!
The Derek Taylor book is on Archive. "As Time Goes By"
As time goes by; living in the sixties with John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Brian Epstein, Allen Klein, Mae West, Brian Wilson, the Byrds, Danny Kaye, the Beach Boys, one wife and six children in London, Los Angeles, New York City, and on the road
From "Goodbye : in search of Gordon Jenkins" by Bruce Jenkins.
Oh look! A few days after the recording session (March 1973) the BBC recorded a studio concert of most of the material! Fantastic! (Click on image to watch on YT).
There's an interesting bit of interplay between Nilsson and Jenkins where Jenkins seems to be throwing a little shade Harry's way. Harry handles it beautifully, but I have to wonder what led up to it.
I've just ordered the Jenkins book and will update if there are any insights to share.

Converting Old MacWrite Files to LibreOffice Using Automator
Found a cache of old MacWrite files (they appear in Finder as a black exec
icon). At least I think they're MacWrite files. They retain the creation dates which are around 1998.
They will open up quite well and retain most of the formatting with LibreOffice. But I was wanting to batch convert them using Automator. Eventually I asked my new friend Chat who was able to help me out. After a few iterations we found something that works like a charm.
The code in the shell script is (can't vouch for the indentation):
for f in "$@" do input_dir=$(dirname "$f") input_filename=$(basename "$f") output_filename="${input_filename%.*}.odt" /Applications/LibreOffice.app/Contents/MacOS/soffice --convert-to odt --outdir "$input_dir" "$f" --headless mv "$input_dir/$output_filename" "$input_dir/$input_filename.odt" done
And if you'd care to see the explanation, here's the full convo with Chat. What was very cool was figuring out how to make the converted file save into the same directory the original was in.
This script will:
- Get the input file directory and filename using the
dirname
andbasename
commands. - Set the output filename to be the input filename with the
.odt
extension using the${input_filename%.*}
syntax. - Use LibreOffice to convert the input file to ODT and save it in the input file directory using the
--outdir
option. - Rename the converted ODT file to have the same name as the input file with the
.odt
extension.Save the Automator workflow.
Now when you run the Automator app and drop MacWrite files onto it, the converted ODT files will be saved in the same directory as the original files with the same filename but with the .odt
extension.
